SDLC (System Development Lifecycle)

SDLC is quite a buzz word in today's technology driven business environment, many professionals do not know what it is, or believe there is one sound SDLC method.  In fact it's an idea, an umbrella term.  SDLC (System Development Life Cycle) is used to organize technology and software project specifically.  It was recognized that these kind of projects have different needs and constraints than other industries, thus a simple concept for project management was created.  In a organization that has multiple projects taking place using some variant of this process, a PMO further creates streamlined efficiency by being a center of organization and tracking among these different projects.

SDLC can take many forms, below are some examples of the overall process.

Bbelow is a more circular display of the SDLC, as we can see, it follows the same theme as the model above calling some of the steps by different names

The waterfall model was used heavily by the government for a time, the term water fall comes from the idea that you complete one phase before moving on to the next.  Each phase will have its own documentation requirements, schedules, resource needs and so on.  If a company has multiple projects like this in varying stages, that's where a PMO would consolidate all the projects and develop uniform processes to increase the level of standardization and efficiencies.
